Excerpt: The House of Wonders, also known as Beit-al-Ajaib, is the largest and tallest building in the old part of Zanzibar town (Stone town) on Zanzibar Island (Tanzania) and occupies a prominent place facing the Forodhani Gardens on the old town's seafront. It was built in 1883 by Sayyid Barghash, the third Sultan of Zanzibar. The House of Wonders was intended as a ceremonial palace and official reception hall, celebrating modernity, and is located close to the older Sultans' Palace, the Beit al-Sahel, of the preceding Omani Sultanate of Muscat. It is one of six palaces built by Sultan Barghash across the island and is said to be located on the site of the seventeenth century palace of Queen Fatuma.
