In the roar of the stream he catchesThe reminiscent echo of colossal cataractsIn the cry of the cliff-birdHe thinks he hears the eagle's screamOr yowl of far-off mountain-lion;In the fall of a loose rockHe fancies the menacing footfall of the grizzly bear;And in the black deeps of the lower canonHis dreaming eyes detect once moreProdigious lines of buffalo crawling snake-wiseAthwart the stream, Or files of Indian warriorsWinding downward to the distant plain, Where camp-fires gleam like stars.
