Frances Cannon is the Managing Director of Sundog Poetry, as well as a writer, artist, and instructor. She has previously taught at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Champlain College, the Vermont Commons School, and the University of Iowa. She has an MFA in creative writing from Iowa and a BA in poetry and printmaking from the University of Vermont. from Predator/PlayWaterlockedThere is an island on a lake, far from any port.The only sources of light on this black night are:the moon—perfectly full in all its cold, blue glory—and a cluster of humans writhing and pulsatingaround light bulbs and flames. Their faces are hiddenbehind masks and streaks of fluorescent paint.They jeer and howl, more at the moon-orbs of their own eyes than at the moon above. A young woman wanders awayfrom the explosive noise of the crowd towards something—silence? Safety? Away from all of thismovement, this noise. The lights burneven through her closed eyelids. She walks, then runsup the hill further into the unknown.
