Memoirs of the Confederate War for Independence (Southern Classics Series)

Written in German, translated into English and first published in Edinburgh in 1866, this unique memoir gives a first-hand account of service of a young officer in the Prussian Army (Heros von Borcke) who took a leave of absence in 1862 to travel to the U.S. (via a blockade runner), where he offered his services to the Confederate Army. Von Borcke was given the rank of captain and was assigned to serve under General J.E.B. Stuart. After distinguishing himself on the battlefield, von Brocke was promoted to lieutenant colonel and received the thanks of the Confederate Congress for his service. He returned to Prussia following the Confederate surrender in 1865.
