Prologue
Make your own educational board games, puzzles, cards and toys, for free, using your printer and online resources. This book is full of Web addresses for hundreds of activities you can download then cut, assemble and play with. THIS BOOK IS FULL OF LINKS. It is not a review of each site, but rather a list of places you can go to make board games and game pieces. For instance, links to homemade dice and spinners are listed. I was a writer reviewing sites for games and this is basically my reference list from that work. It is a list of links which took quite a while to compile and will save you a lot of time if you are looking to make your own games. You can make your own paper tangrams, dice or spinners. Make your own flashcards, quizzes or graphs. Print out board games to learn about everything from exponents and algebra to safety in natural disasters. Play holiday themed games or make your own paper Go, Chess, Boggle or Scrabble games. Create your own words for game boards or use pre-made game boards. You can even print out car bingo for travels! Learn how to use Web resources to make learning fun! All basic subjects are covered with these resources and they make a great addition to any classroom in addition to just being fun for family play time. The author, Kirsten Anderberg, took graduate level classes in education and technology at CA State University at Northridge while earning her MA Degree, which is how she became interested in Web resources for teaching. She also gave her son, Gibralter, educational games in his youth, which he now thanks her for as an adult. Giving kids educational games helps give them a leg up for school. Kirsten writes articles about educational technology for Demand Studios and other educational outlets. Kirsten also just thinks making paper toys and games is very cool fun!(This is a second edition with better formatting than the first edition.)
