Ash. -- Mineral matter left after burning; ashes. Awns. -- Beards on seed-coats or on chaff. Bacteria. -- Extremely small one-celled plants, -- the smallest members of the plant kingdom. They depend on other plants or animals, either living or dead, for food. Bast. -- The fibrous part of the bark. Bracts. -- Leaflets near the base of true leaf, or on rootstocks; any leaves normally much reduced in size.
