About the Book The Kingdom of Mapungubwe was the first state in Southern Africa. Mapungubwe was the capital of this state, which arose in the 12th century. By 1500, most of southern Africa had established states, with the Ovambo in northwestern Namibia engaged in farming and the Herero engaged in herding. In South Africa and Botswana Sotho–Tswana states emerged, and the Nguni peoples also engaged in state building. Earlier Khoisan populations around Cape Province were absorbed by Bantu peoples, and in the 17th century the Dutch arrived, developing into the Afrikaner people. The Afrikaners, or Boers fought two wars against the British Empire (1880/81 and 1899/1902), being armed by Imperial Germany. The British prevailed, and Afrikaners contributed to the Great War on Britain's side, however there was widespread support among Afrikaners for Nazi Germany in World war 2. From 1948–1994, racial segregation called 'Apartheid' (established by the UK) and rule by the white minority dominated South African politics. Following massive interrnal and external pressure the white minority in 1992 voted for democracy.
