Prologue
The concept for An Illustrated History of Scientology was concocted in the Fall of 2004, when L. Rick Vodicka was in Illustration class. After an arduous stretch of several weeks, the book was completed in December 2004 - going above and beyond the call of duty and barely meeting the deadline.Shortly thereafter, in January of 2005, An Illustrated History of Scientology was converted into a PDF book and published on the website Toilville.com. It was there that the book started attracting attention, though not all of it was positive! After only a few months online, An Illustrated History of Scientology was forced off of the Internet by Ava Paquette, a no-nonsense lawyer for The Church of Scientology, on the grounds of copyright infringement and exposing the mysterious secrets that make Scientology great.A second, safer edition of the book was created after this incident. It was made available through L. Rick Vodicka’s new personal website in June of 2005. It was also available through a website run by Roger Gonnet of France (the book was also translated into French). Ava Paquette once again lept into action, temporarily killing L. Rick’s personal website.L. Rick Vodicka moved his website to a new host and all was well once again. One day soon thereafter, a minister for the Boston Church of Scientology gave L. Rick Vodicka a phone call with an odd request of wanting to "meet" with him. L. Rick Vodicka respectfully declined this kind offer and has not heard from any Scientologists since that time.November 16, 2005: The popular animated series South Park aired a controversial episode that exposed the secrets of Scientology. Many people, now intrigued by the Church of Scientology, stumbled upon An Illustrated History of Scientology. Unauthorized reproductions of L. Rick Vodicka's illustrations were disseminated around Cyberspace.Nearly a year later, L. Rick Vodicka decided to revisit his illustrated tome with colored markers in hand. An Illustrated History of Scientology: Third Edition was begun; this time in color and with enhanced illustrations and revisions. With no time constraints or deadlines, the book can finally reach its full inherent potential, much like a Preclear who removes her body thetans through multiple Auditing sessions with an E-meter.Hopefully, An Illustrated History of Scientology has helped to persuade you into becoming an official Scientologist.
