In Greek Poetry: From Homer To Seferis C.A. Trypanis traces the development of poetry written in Greek from the Homeric Epics to the present day. This long evolution, the longest uninterrupted literary and cultural tradition in the Western world, has never been treated as a whole before. Thus, for the first time, the line is traced which leads from the splendour of classical Greek epic, lyric and dramatic verse through the learned Alexandrians to the medieval Greek world with its exhilarating Christian religious poetry, existing side by side with verse based on the forms of Byzantium; and it ends with the appearance of a new poetry in the vernacular.
