Prologue
After teaching at the American School in Cairo for one year, Mrs. Magda decides to expand her career path and become a child and family advocate, with the goal of empowering students and parents. But she is at a loss when she’s faced with the task of helping children who have been traumatized by Islamic teachers who deviate from the curriculum and teach information that is not credible, nor in line with Islamic values. What’s more, she is challenged by a university professor who grades unfairly and according to her own biased views, and a teacher who misdiagnoses a child as having special needs. In the meantime, Maha starts her freshman year at American International University, but she’s determined to leave Egypt and transfer to another institution abroad. However, her core values are shaken by the difficult realities of getting good grades, passing her Arabic class, personal betrayals, social pressure, setting boundaries with guys who are ‘just friends’, and the prospect of marriage. She is also struggling to uncover the truth as to why the famous author, Naguib Mahfouz, wrote a book about her grandmother.
