Safety Concepts in Land Use Engineering: The Case of Underground Infrastructures (Series 02 Research in Progress in Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management 01)

Land use engineering of focusing on optimizing and improving infrastructure systems in regional and urban areas. Of major consideration are safety issues, which refer to physical and social threats of life and property, economic losses, and environmental degradation. This monograph proposes a new interactive modeling approach to derive safety concepts for different organizations. Special emphasis is placed on underground infrastructures. The modeling process focuses both on the participative process involving many different parties, as well as on formal and analytic concepts to assess risks and to define safety goals.The audience consists of land use engineers, risk and policy analysis, managers, decision and policy makers, government officials, and students. The monograph can be used as guideline for deriving a safety concept or as reference for the discussed methods, tools, and modeling paradigms. References to governmental handbook and industrial guidelines from Europe and the United States are also given.
