The late Nineteenth Century saw many changes as the nation expanded further and further toward its acquired lands, bringing “civilization,” and more corruption, with it. In West Texas, counties were being reduced to more manageable sizes, and thus Irion County was borne in 1889. As the state legislature officially organized the county, local officials were appointed to begin the government, holding their positions until elections could be held. Many sought those positions of power, while others accepted their appointments as temporary, only wishing to help the county get up and running.One of those who answered the call was middle-aged rancher Matt Kincaid, a former Texas Ranger.
