Prologue
The author made two trips to the Cape Verde islands (Cabo Verde) and Portuguese Guinea in 1936-37. This is the description of the first of them. He spent some time on nearly every one of the Cape Verde islands and traveled extensively throughout the obscure colony of Portuguese Guinea which had been brought fully under control only 20 years before. There is one excellent map, and a number of black and white photos. The author made many friends and looked into all kinds of aspects of life in these two places, seldom heard from.
