Prologue
AMERICAN TAPESTRY is a new book of 32 original poems and narrative essays by Steve Zak, author of the previously published book of poetry, which is available on Kindle Direct, Journeys Through Time.Writing about historical events is never an easy task. American Tapestry is a new book of poetry and narratives that focus on exploring many important events in our history, as well as looking at the everyday portrait of places and people that form the incredible tapestry that constitutes the American experience, right up to the present time of COVID.-The poems portray important events such as the American Civil War, the Great Depression and the aftereffects of the Second World War in a highly readable free form, narrative style.-Several of the poems take a casual and refreshing look at the current American landscape with stops along the way in such states as Florida, New York, Mississippi, California and Montana.-There is an interesting perspective on the American West starting out from the Wild West era of Cowboys and Outlaws to the majesty of the Arizona deserts.-On this journey of America, a couple of poems look at how we actually navigate our way around the country.-There are several exciting pieces that highlight different American sports as well as what it is like to be a celebrity in our culture. -There is a stop along the way that looks at real events that have happened from the Space program to the violence in our everyday lives.-Several poems reflect the cultural transformation our country is facing as we grapple with life in the era of Covid.-The poem Mother Brown is a true and powerful view of American history as seen in the life of a woman born as a slave in 1847 up until her death in 1970.-The last piece in the book is a narrative that takes a look at America in the 1930's and some of the awe-inspiring accomplishments that still define us today as a nation. The thirty-two original poems and narrative essays in American Tapestry embrace the idea that each one should tell a story and create a vivid portrait of America, both past and present. It is a picture of who we are as a nation, where we have been and perhaps where we are going in the future. It is a journey that is well worth your time.
