Prologue
A Habit of Shores is the sequel to A Native Clearing (1993). Together with Man of Earth (1989), it covers almost a hundred years of Philippine poetry in English. It comprises Filipino poets born between 1942 and 1976--more than three decades; in all, there are 96 poets, of whom thirty are women poets. That it includes a few Filipino American poets is perhaps suggestive that even in America, the poet has a sense for his shores by which he forges--in its double sense, to fashion and to feign--from English a vocabulary and syntax to speak the language of the blood.
