Gyeltsen had been described as "one of the last living Tibetan Buddhist masters to have been trained in Tibet before the Chinese occupation" at the time of his death in 2009. Geshe Gyeltsen founded the Thubten Dhargye Ling Buddhist center in 1978. He was a member of the same Buddhist sect , known as the Gelug or Yellow Hat sect , as the 14th Dalai Lama . Biography Early life Gyeltsen was born Jamphel Yeshe in 1923, in Kham , an eastern region of Tibet . He became a Buddist monk when he was just seven years old. He undertook a journey to the Gaden Monastery near Lhasa when he was sixteen years old. The journey, which took 33 days, involved walking through 25 separate mountain passes to reach the Gaden Shartse Monastaery . Gyeltsen remained as a student at the monastery for the next twenty years. Flight from Tibet The 14th Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 following the failure of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the Chinese government, where he eventually founded the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharmsala . Gyeltsen and fifty other Tibetan monks also fled to India shortly after the Dalai Lama. The group of fifty monks, which included Gyeltsen, travelled for a month, in order to enter India. Their flight included a three day march over the Himalaya Mountains .
