Overview: Cecilia ha tredici anni ed è una ragazza normalissima, con una normalissima cotta per un compagno di classe che però non la fila. Così, per attirare la sua attenzione, decide di farsi fare un piercing all’ombelico. Dopo molte insistenze, ottiene il permesso dai genitori. Come piercing sceglie una strana pietruzza che ha tutto l’aspetto di un occhietto. Una sera, tornando da una festa di Halloween a casa di un’amica, Cecilia scorge una donna che si getta dalla finestra a cavallo di una scopa. Pur restando sconvolta, in seguito pensa di avere avuto un’allucinazione per il bicchiere di birra che ha bevuto dall’amica. Ma ha altre due misteriose apparizioni, per cui chiede spiegazioni a una conoscente che ha fama di essere sensitiva. La donna arriva alla conclusione che il piercing di Cecilia è magico: anzi, è una specie di ‟terzo occhio” che le permette di vedere presenze di un’altra dimensione. Non a caso la ragazza ha avuto i tre strani avvistamenti sempre quand’era a pancia scoperta. Sconvolta dalla rivelazione, Cecilia decide di togliersi il piercing, ma non ci riesce. Allora, in attesa dell’appuntamento con il medico che dovrebbe toglierglielo, vi applica un cerotto e comincia a indossare solo maglioni che le coprano l’ombelico. Nel frattempo il ragazzo per cui ha una cotta continua a ignorarla e un giorno lei, per rendersi interessante, gli racconta del piercing magico e delle apparizioni. Il ragazzo la prega allora di aiutarlo. Infatti è appena morto un suo lontano e ricchissimo parente, che però non ha lasciato alla sua famiglia (unici eredi possibili) nessuna eredità, in quanto il suo patrimonio si è come volatilizzato. Il ragazzo fa parte di una famiglia numerosissima e suo padre ha appena perso il lavoro, perciò quell’eredità potrebbe rimediare una situazione disperata. Per questo chiede a Cecilia di usare il suo occhio magico per indagare sul denaro scomparso. Comincia così l’avventura dei due ragazzi, che parte dalla tomba del defunto, fino ad arrivare a un maniero infestato. Alla fine il malloppo viene recuperato, la famiglia indigente si risolleva dalla miseria e Cecilia è finalmente ricambiata. Ovviamente si fa togliere il piercing, ma non dimenticherà il suo inverno magico.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. A solid 5/5 for me.

It was okay. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.
