Il est un temps professeur dans son pays natal et commence un travail de recherche sur les entreprises: il obtient une bourse pour etudier les entreprises et industries aux Etats-Unis. Ces travaux lui inspireront l'article celebre qu'il publie en 1937, The nature of the firm (La nature de l'entreprise). Il obtient un doctorat en economie de l'universite de Londres en 1951 et emigre aux Etats-Unis la meme annee pour enseigner a l'Universite de Buffalo.
