Overview: Under Heinrich Himmlers ledning blev SS, nazisternas elitorganisation, en politisk maktfaktor. SS växte mellan 1933 och 1945 till en stat i staten genom vilken Himmler i praktiken kunde föra en egen utrikespolitik. Himmler föreställde sig ett övernationellt, storgermanskt styre i Nord- och Västeuropa efter kriget. En radikal vision som också innefattade Sverige, ett land som Himmler ansåg utgjorde den germanska rasens främsta kärnland. För att kunna omsätta visionen i verklighet drev Himmler på en infiltration av olika delar i det svenska samhället. SS förgreningar och propaganda i Sverige nådde bland annat polisen, personer inom läkarkåren, frivilliga till Waffen-SS och jordbrukets intresseorganisationer.I Lennart Westbergs nya bok Himmlers Sverige skildras denna verksamhet, och Himmlers långsiktiga planer för Sverige, för första gången i sin helhet.Heinrich Himmlers svarta orden Schutzstaffel, mer känt som SS, upphör av flera orsaker aldrig att fascinera historiskt intresserade läsare. Himmlers dynamiska och snabba expansion av SS präglade i hög grad Hitlertyskland och organisationen blev på flera sätt en stat i staten. Dubbelblixtarna, de germanska runornas tecken, blev mellan 1933 och 1945 alltmer en symbol för en ökad radikalisering av nationalsocialismens politik där Himmler inte sällan drev på Hitlers och hans vasallers storhetsvansinne.Men Heinrich Himmlers kontakter med Sverige under åren 1933–1945, inte minst i skuggan av SS storgermanska visioner för vårt land, har överraskande nog inte blivit föremål för en mer övergripande eller djupgående skildring. Det finns ett antal habila böcker av fackhistoriker samt av populärvetenskaplig natur om SS olika krigstida beröringspunkter med Sverige. Men för första gången intar nu Lennart Westberg ett mer analytiskt och bredare helikopterperspektiv när han skildrar SS visioner med Sverige. Ämnet för boken är särskilt relevant med tanke på att Himmler, med sin fascination för germanskt–nordiska frågor, hade ett särskilt intresse för Sverige.Boken går pedagogiskt och systematiskt igenom hur Himmler och SS olika förgreningar sökte påverka olika delar av det svenska samhället. I sina infiltrationsförsök av olika delar av samhällsapparaten stödde sig Himmler främst på SS arkeologiska germankult via forskningsstiftelsen Ahnenerbe, sitt monopol i polis- och säkerhetsfrågor för bekämpningen av den sovjetiska Wollweberligan, den viktiga rekryteringen av svenska krigsfrivilliga till Waffen-SS, placeringen av en fast representant i Stockholm från Sicherheitsdienst (SD) samt SS-infiltration av det tyska utrikesdepartementet vilket lät Himmler till viss del föra en egen utrikespolitik. Även i andra avseenden bedrev SS en framgångsrik propaganda- och infiltrationsverksamhet, framför allt gentemot det svenska jordbrukets intresseorganisationer och i vissa delar mot svenska läkare, sjuksköterskor och barnmorskor.Utan kunskap om Himmlers radikala visioner att ersätta den traditionella nationalstaten med ett övernationellt storgermanskt statsskick för den nya raseliten har vi knappast förutsättningar att förstå Himmlers långsiktiga planer för Sverige, som han ansåg utgjorde den germanska rasens främsta kärnland.
