Overview: Il Fantastico tedesco, e in particolare la figura del "fantasma vendicatore", affondano le proprie radici in lontani miti nordici. Alla fine del Settecento il racconto di fantasmi era nel Centro Europa un genere letterario popolare, caratterizzato dalla fusione tra il regno della natura e quello della fantasia, considerato un completamento del reale, e non un elemento di rottura: lo spettro che ritorna dal mondo dei morti non rappresenta una violazione dell'ordine costituito, ma piuttosto il fattore in grado di ripristinare un superiore stato di giustizia, violato o mai realizzato. Questa sorta di omogeneità tra realtà e fantasia tipica del Fantastico tedesco è ben rappresentata dei racconti di Hoffmann e Meyrink: nel primo prevale il "genio del bizzarro", che confonde in un unico disegno di follia il mondo di tutti i giorni e un misterioso "altrove", mentre in Meyrink è piuttosto la presenza di concetti mistici tradizionali a conferire alla fantasia la stessa vitalità comunemente assegnata alle percezioni.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Finished it in a couple of days. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Pretty good overall. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Not bad at all.
