Overview: L'Almanacco Guanda 2008 intende esplorare il fenomeno recente di un ritorno dei narratori italiani a temi-personaggi-questioni di politica, a cui risponde, specularmente, un altro ritorno: quello del giornalismo politico d'impianto fortemente romanzesco. Questo giornalismo, seppure debitore alla lezione di Lino Jannuzzi e dell'Espresso anni '60-70, ha aggiunto nuovi ritrovati narrativi: le intercettazioni, i retroscena, il gossip, le cene, le amicizie. Tutti elementi che fanno virare verso il romanzo le pagine dell'informazione politica.Romanzo e politica: nella storia dell'Italia unita ci sono state molte stagioni in cui il binomio ha funzionato. Dopo l'Unità, i grandi siciliani (Verga, De Roberto, il giovane Pirandello); gli scrittori a cavallo della Grande guerra; i neorealisti (legati alla tematica dell impegno). Ma dalla fine degli anni 70 e invalsa una tendenza narrativa drasticamente privata, chiusa a ogni esigenza non solo di critica, ma anche di rappresentazione del reale sociale e politico. Cosa peraltro subito seguita anche dal cinema. Se questa ripresa di attenzione è diventata evidente a tutti con il successo nazionale e internazionale di Roberto Saviano, la questione è in realta più complessa. Merito grande di questo ritorno va agli scrittori «noir» (Lucarelli, De Cataldo, Fois ecc.). Poi sono venuti i romanzi fuori dal genere ma fortemente ancorati al panorama politico: due nomi fra tutti, Franco Cordelli (Il duca di Mantova) e Walter Siti (Troppi paradisi, Contagio). L'Almanacco 2008 vuole offrire una riflessione a piu voci su questo nuovo panorama, con interventi di Bruno Arpaia, Gianni Biondillo, Marzio Breda, Fulvia Caprara, Alberto Casadei, Roberto Casalini, Franco Cordelli, Andrea Cortellessa, Giancarlo De Cataldo, Mario Desiati, Paolo Franchi, Giuseppe Genna, Ranieri Polese, Alberto Rebori, Gaetano Savatteri, Corrado Stajano.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. A solid 5/5 for me.

It was just alright. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.
