Overview: De tre tanterna bor i en liten stad och förutom att alla tre har en tydlig favoritfärg har var och en tydliga sysslor: Tant Grön (Jeanette) tar hand om trädgården, Tant Brun (Marie-Louise) bakar pepparkakor och kokar knäck och Tant Gredelin (Agate-Julie) broderar, saftar och syltar. Bland dessa damer finns en mycke omtyckt liten herre, och då tänker jag inte på Herr Blå som bor på andra sidan gatan, utan den lilla pudeln Prick. Det blir stor uppståndelse när han en dag springer bort och alla tanterna ger sig ut för att leta. Tant Brun hittar honom inte, men däremot finner hon två små ledsna barn som blivit skrämda av en full gubbe (!). Hon tröstar barnen med pepparkakor och får veta att de heter Petter och Lotta, att de är föräldralösa och bor hos Tvätt-Kristin som egentligen inte vill veta av dem. Tant Grön hittar inte heller Prick, men väl en fin liten katt (Esmeralda). Nej, det blir till slut Petter och Lotta som hittar Prick i den fulla gubbens säck. Och kan man tänka sig: Tant Grön behöver hjälp av en duktig pojke i trädgården och Tant Brun och Gredelin behöver hjälp av en duktig flicka med att baka kakor och trä nålen på brodertråden. Lilla Esmeralda fick så klart stanna för man behövde också en duktig katt som kunde jaga råttor, lapa grädde och leka med nystan slutet gott alltså! Inspiration till tanterna och deras lilla stad fick Elsa Beskow från sina mostrar i Trosa. Denna första bok blev inledningen till en serie med fem böcker om tanterna, Petter och Lotta!
