Overview: Robert Jacob Gordon is vrijwel vergeten in Nederland. Maar in de achttiende eeuw was deze Nederlander met Schotse wortels een bekendheid. Hij maakte lange reizen door het nog ongerepte Zuidelijk Afrika en liet ons een fabuleuze verzameling journaals, kaarten, tekeningen en schilderijen na. Deze 'Atlas Gordon' bevindt zich tegenwoordig in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. Gordon biedt ons een unieke blik op het tijdperk van de Verlichting, toen kolonialisme samenging met een enorme honger naar kennis. Hij was bevriend met zowel vooraanstaande wetenschappers als inheemse stamhoofden. Hij was militair en diplomaat, botanist, zo öloog, cartograaf en antroploog. Op zijn geheel eigen wijze verbeeldt hij het Verlichtingsideaal. Luc Panhuysen beschrijft in dit boek de persoon Gordon en zijn ontdekkingsreizen, aan de hand van origineel bronmateriaal. Such a great read. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Will be looking for more from this author.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Would probably read it again at some point.
