Overview: Abe Kobo (1924–1993) was one of Japan's greatest postwar writers, widely recognized for his imaginative science fiction and plays of the absurd. However, he also wrote theoretical criticism for which he is lesser known, merging literary, historical, and philosophical perspectives into keen reflections on the nature of creativity, the evolution of the human species, and an impressive range of other subjects. I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Just right down the middle.

Really enjoyed this one. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. A solid 5/5 for me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.

Pretty good overall. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. Enjoyable weekend read.
