Overview: Tanpinar (1901-1962) is geboren in Istanboel, Turkije, en groeide uit tot één van de belangrijkste romanschrijvers en essayisten binnen de Turkse moderne literatuur. Hij is bekend als grote dichter en criticus en was werkzaam als professor Ottomaanse en Turkse litertauur aan Istanbul University. Hij is tevens lid geweest van het Turkse parlement. Sereen wordt gezien als een iconische Turkse roman. De roman is gesitueerd in Istanboel, aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog (1939). Sereen is opgedeeld in vier delen, vernoemd naar de hoofdpersonen; "Ihsan", "Nuran", "Suad" en "Mümtaz". Alle ontwikkelingen in de roman - zowel psychologische als sociaal, nationaal en internationaal - zijn doorspekt met een gevoel van permanente veranderlijkheid en onzekerheid. Zowel het belang als de kwetsbaarheid van de relaties tussen de vier hoofdpersonen komen tot uiting in lyrische passages van modernistische en symbolische proza. Invloeden van James Joyce, Marcel Proust en Fyodor Dostoyevsky zijn voelbaar. Really enjoyed this one. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. A solid 5/5 for me.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
