Description: The CAVAL Working Party on Performance Measures for Reference Services was established in 1994 to identify performance measures and indicators currently used to evaluate reference services in Victorian academic libraries. From 1994 to 1997 focus groups were conducted with reference staff, library managers, undergraduate students, postgraduate students and academic staff across nine universities. The focus group participants were asked to identify the tasks performed by the reference service and the indicators and measures used to evaluate those services. Progress reports in 1995 and 1997 (CAVAL Reference Interest Group, 1995; CAVAL Reference Interest Group, 1997) presented the data from the reference staff and library managers focus groups.This final report presents the data from the user constituencies of postgraduate students and academic staff, and undergraduate students. A comparison of the data from all constituencies highlights areas of agreement and differences among the constituencies. Through the course of the study, twenty-one indicators for evaluating reference service were identified from the focus group data. As the data was collected and analysed, new indicators emerged or were refined. In particular the User Satisfaction indicator, which had been widely commented on in the reference staff and library managers focus groups,developed more depth through the user focus groups.
