Overview: Un trentenaire, après des années de formation et de tentatives, trouve enfin un emploi auprès d'un laboratoire public. L'unique tâche qui lui est confiée étant de vérifier le matériel livré chaque matin…Ses journées se passent ainsi, entre l'ennui et la contemplation du vide. Là, il trouve des dossiers stupéfiants sur des « symptomatiques » : un homme au doigt duquel pousse un ginkgo, un autre qui veut devenir chat, des sauteurs du temps, des narcoleptiques insensés, des mosaïqueurs de mémoires, des extraterrestres exilés sur Terre, etc. : un catalogue de l'inimaginable réalisé. Surpris par Dr Kwon, maître du placard, il se voit contraint de devenir son assistant pour suivre ces dossiers et répondre aux appels des symptomatiques.Le Placard est l’histoire d’un homme qui décrit la vie des «symptomatiques », des personnes qui manifestent d'étranges symptômes, signes avant-courreurs d’une nouvelle ère de l’humanité. Ces symptomatiques forment une cohorte étrange où se mêlent un « hibernaute » qui a dormi 172 jours, un Pinocchio dont le doigt de bois - une prothèse - reprend chair et sang, un néo-hermaprodite capable de se reproduire seul et quelques buveurs de pétroles et mangeurs d'acier. Mais le placard n°13, qui accueille ces cas délirants, est surtout la boîte de Pandore du monde à venir… Critique amère de notre société dite post-moderne, sur un ton caustique, ce roman s'inscrit dans la lignée des Temps Modernes de Chaplin. Les symptomatiques sont les pantins perdus qui font face à la réalité de notre société. Chaplin, mais aussi Cervantes ou Flaubert, Le Placard est un roman gothique et fou, dépourvu de règles, libre. Et les vérités des symptomatiques prennent vie grâce à l’écriture de l'auteur. Drôle et piquant, Kim Un-su donne au narrateur une distance particulière. I have mixed feelings about this one. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Will be looking for more from this author.
