Overview: Ooit werden patiënten met psychische problemen in opvallend veel culturen ‘behandeld’ door priesters, religieuze voorgangers. In Europa is die situatie al heel lang voorbij, al spelen volksgeneeswijzen met hun religieuze riten nog altijd hun rol. Dokters met een psychiatrische specialisatie en therapeuten met een grote kennis van klinische psychologie hebben de plaats van religieuze genezers ingenomen. Van de weeromstuit zijn bij het ontstaan en bij de behandeling van psychiatrische stoornissen religieuze aspecten lange tijd als schadelijk weggezet en op grote schaal veronachtzaamd. Af en toe dook religie even op, maar bleef niet veel anders dan de verloren dimensie. Inmiddels is het zonneklaar dat religie en spiritualiteit niet alleen een rol kunnen spelen bij de etiologie van psychisch lijden, maar evenzeer is het duidelijk dat veel patiënten die middenin een religieuze traditie staan erbij gebaat zijn dat een behandelaar hun milieu en hun mores goed aanvoelt. Religie moet binnen de psychiatrie dus weer een klinisch relevante factor worden. Binnen de superspecialisatie van de (trans)culturele psychiatrie is dat al enigermate het geval.Inmiddels is er heel wat instrumentarium voor de diagnostiek en de behandeling van patiënten met (gedeeltelijk) godsdienstige problematiek of patiënten uit uitgesproken religieuze milieus voor handen – onder andere vanuit de World Psychiatric Association. Dat materiaal wordt in dit nieuwe handboek uitvoerig aan de orde gesteld. Gericht op de klinische praktijk wordt de thematiek in al z’n facetten onderzocht: conceptuele en filosofische vragen naar opleiding en training, religieuze psychopathologie, specifieke input vanuit de neurowetenschappen, ervaringen uit onderzoek en behandeling. Daarmee wordt niet alleen een bijdrage geleverd aan het verbeteren van het dagelijks klinisch werk, maar ook aan reflectie op aard, inhoud en ethiek van de psychiatrie. Op deze manier strekt het belang van dit handboek zich tot ver buiten de psychiatrie uit.

Good, but not quite perfect. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. A solid 4 stars from me.
