Discover Atomic Accidents: A History of Nuclear Meltdowns and Disasters: From the Ozark Mountains to Fukushima by James Mahaffey. Start reading today and explore ideas, insights, and experiences that stay with you.

Overview: A “delightfully astute” and “entertaining” history of the mishaps and meltdowns that have marked the path of scientific progress (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Radiation: What could go wrong? In short, plenty. From Marie Curie carrying around a vial of radium salt because she liked the pretty blue glow to the large-scale disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima, dating back to the late nineteenth century, nuclear science has had a rich history of innovative exploration and discovery, coupled with mistakes, accidents, and downright disasters. In this lively book, long-time advocate of continued nuclear research and nuclear energy James Mahaffey looks at each incident in turn and analyzes what happened and why, often discovering where scientists went wrong when analyzing past meltdowns. Every incident, while taking its toll, has led to new understanding of the mighty atom—and the fascinating frontier of science that still holds both incredible risk and great promise.

Pretty good overall. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. Not bad at all.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. Enjoyable weekend read.

It was just alright. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.

A solid read. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. A solid 4 stars from me.

Such a great read. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Worth the time and money.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Glad I picked this up.

It was just alright. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
