Overview: Amsterdam. De raad van commissarissen van bank en verzekeraar SNS Reaal is bij de overname van Bouwfonds Property Finance in 2006 door de raad van bestuur onvolledig geïnformeerd over de risico’s. Dit blijkt uit een vertrouwelijke en zeer kritische evaluatie van SNS Reaal die niet eerder is geopenbaard en wordt beschreven in het boek ‘Giftig Krediet’ van NRC-journalisten Tom Kreling en Esther Rosenberg, dat maandag verschijnt.De evaluatie is een opsomming van fouten en slordigheden. De raad van commissarissen vroeg daarom aan de bestuurders om buitenlandse vastgoedexperts mee te laten kijken bij het boekenonderzoek. Dat gebeurde niet, terwijl dit volgens de evaluatie wel “in de rede had gelegen”.Ook zijn de vastgoedleningen, die de bank tot een jaar na de overname bij juridische problemen aan verkoper ABN Amro had kunnen teruggeven, door juristen slechts deels en at face value doorgelicht. Zo zijn er van de 3.000 beleggingsfinancieringen maar 300 onderzocht als SNS Reaal de verkoper laat weten dat de gehele portefeuille in orde is.De verliezen bij de vastgoedbank zorgden er uiteindelijk voor dat SNS Reaal een jaar geleden werd genationaliseerd door minister Dijsselbloem (Financiën, PvdA). Het kostte de staat 3,7 miljard euro.In het boek beschrijven de twee journalisten de onvermijdelijke ondergang van SNS Reaal, die volgt op de overname van Bouwfonds Property Finance in 2006. Aan de hand van meer dan honderd gesprekken met betrokken en met gebruik van interne notulen, memo’s en rapporten schetsen de schrijvers hoe de voormalige spaarbank na een succesvolle beursgang verdwaald raakt in de wereld van het vastgoed. Finished it in a couple of days. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Glad I picked this up.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
