Overview: Black Sun is the title of a new book by artist Shezad Dawood, the London-based artist whose film, painting, and experimental video critiques established notions of identity. It's a wide-ranging work that's hinged on the notion of a black sun, a mnemonic tool for the understanding that total light is total darkness, or, the idea that in order to really see the very source of vision, one must simultaneously reckon with crippling blindness. This metaphor is used to describe the production of identity in those groups without a fixed place, including ethnic and racial diasporas, mercenaries of big capital, and - increasingly - everyone that's plugged into the net. The tome contains essays and art that deal with the stuff you'd find in the outer-reaches of society: mystical experience, alchemical mysteries, the melancholic and pitiful gropings for meaning and truth. Rather than sticking to art-world and academy jargon, real histories of artists and the dispossessed are explored, as much as the inky abyss of existence. I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Would probably read it again at some point.

Good, but not quite perfect. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. A solid 4 stars from me.

A very satisfying read. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
