Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun özellikle Avrupa ile ilişkileri açısından en önemli eserdir. Zaten Osmanlı tarihinin en büyük kısmının Avrupa ile ilişkilerden ibaret olduğu dikkate alınırsa en önemli Osmanlı tarihlerinden biri olduğu rahatça anlaşılır.Zinkeisen, eserini hazırlarken Türk tarihçilerinin haberdar olmadığı ve bugünkü şartlarda bile ulaşmalarının çok zor olduğu kaynakları kullanmıştır. Zinkeisen, Batılı kaynakları ve arşivleri Hammer'den daha fazla kullanan bir tarihçidir.Zinkeisen'in eserinde Osmanlılar'a karşı Avrupa'da kurulmaya çalışılan ittifakların, antlaşmaların perde arkaları, elçilerin İstanbul'daki faaliyetleri, Avrupalı hükümdarların Şark siyasetleri, Osmanlı devlet teşkilatı, savaşların gidişatı ve Osmanlı fetihleri hakkında inanılmaz ve duyulmamış teferruatlı bilgiler vardır. Erhan AfyoncuBüyük Osmanlı tarihinin asıl kaynakları kuşkusuz Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivleri, kadı sicilleri, vakıflar ve müftülük arşivleridir. Bu belge hazineleri kullanılmadan bu tarih hakkıyla yazılamaz. Ancak, Avrupa arşiv ve kütüphaneleri Osmanlı tarihi üzerinde muazzam bir malzeme yığını saklamakta ve Türk araştırıcılar ancak şimdilerde bu kaynaklara el atabilmektedirler. Avrupa arşivleri ve vekâyinâme kolleksiyonları, Avrupalı tarihçiler tarafından oldukça etraflı araştırmalara konu olmuştur. İlk araştırıcılar, XV-XVI. yüzyılda Angielello, Giovio, Sansovino gibi İtalyan tarihçilerdir. Bu bakımdan Avusturyalı tarihçi J. W. Zinkeisen, kuşkusuz başta gelir. Hammer'den farklı olarak Zinkeisen'in eserini orjinal ve değerli kılan nokta, olaylarla çağdaş Batı kaynaklarını ayrıntılı biçimde kullanmasıdır. Zinkeisen, yayınlanmış belge kolleksiyonlarını ve çağdaş kronikleri kullanır (bu arada A. von Gevay, Urkunden und Aktenstücke zur Geschichte der Verhältnisse zwischen Österreich, Ungarn und der Pforte im XVI und XVII Jahrh., III cilt, Viyana 1838-1842; Charrière, Négociations de La France Daus le Levant, Paris 1848-1860).Zinkeisen'in eseri, 19. yüzyıl ortalarında yazılmış olmakla beraber, geniş bir perspektif içinde kullandığı kaynaklar dolayısıyla bugün de değerini korumaktadır. Özellikle, şimdiye kadar hiçbir Türk tarihçisinin yabancı kaynakları bu ölçüde kullanmadığı göz önüne alınırsa, eserin Türkçe çevirisi tarih edebiyatımız için büyük kazançtır.Zinkeisen'den yaklaşık yarım yüzyıl sonra N. Jorga (Iorga), Osmanlı Tarihi üzerinde yeniden 5 ciltlik bir genel tarih yayınladı: Geschichte des Osmanischen Reiches, Gotha 1908-1913. Jorga'nın tarihini ötekilerden ayrıt eden özellik, İtalyan arşivlerinde çalışarak topladığı orjinal belgeleri eserinde kullanmasıdır (bu belgeler VI. cilt halinde Bükreş'te yayımlanmıştır: Notes et Extraits pour servir à léhistoire des Croisades). Jorga'nın beş ciltlik eseri gibi Zinkeisen'i de Türkçeye kazandıran değerli tarihçi, Erhan Afyoncu ve mesai arkadaşlarını burada kutlamak bir ödevdir. Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcıkJohann Wilhelm Zinkeisen, altmış yıllık bir ömrün içine bizce Osmanlı İmparatorluğu tarihçiliğinin en önemli eserini sığdırmış bir yazardır. Doğu dillerini bilmiyor, daha ilginci Türkçeyi de. Araştırmalarında Türkçe kaynaklar, arşiv vesikaları ve vekayinâmeler yeralamaz. Hatta bu konuda sonraki tarihçilerden Romanyalı Nicolae Jorga'nın bile gerisindedir. Jorga hiç değilse birtakım vesikaları tercüme ettirmiş, tercüme edilen vekayinâmeleri harfiyen takip etmişti. Fakat Zinkeisen'i bence hepsine üstün kılan bir tarafı var. Kendi dünyasını yani Batı dünyasını bütün ikincil kaynaklardan ve de geniş ölçüde Viyana, Venedik ve diğer ülke arşivlerinden tarayarak ortaya çıkarıyor. İşte bu, 19. yüzyılın ortasında yazılan bir Osmanlı tarihine çok büyük bir değer kazandırmaktadır ve bu nedenle Zinkeisen'i şahsen bütün araştırma hayatımda kullanmışımdır. Mesela 1711 Prut Barışı hakkında ne Hammer'de ne de başka bir kaynakta yeterli belgeyi bulamazsınız. Hâlbuki Zinkeisen burada antlaşmanın bütün alt vesikalarını, mahiyetlerini ratio-legis dediğimiz bütün unsurların hepsini tespit etmektedir. O kadar ki Kırım Hanlığı'nın 1711 tarihli bir üniversalyasını araştırdığım zaman Zinkeisen'de daha birtakım yan belgelerin yer aldığını görmüştüm.Görünüşte Alman bölgesinin tipik Batılı bir tarihçisidir. Önemli ikinci eserinin doğrudan doğruya modern Yunanistan tarihi ile ilgili olduğunu söylemeliyiz. Bu eser de bir an evvel Türk diline kazandırılmalıdır.
