Overview: In 'Memoires van een kip', een in meerdere opzichten opmerkelijke Palestijnse roman uit 1943, verwondert een filosofisch ingestelde kip zich over haar nieuwe ren en deelt zij haar observaties over haar nieuwe eigenaar en medebewoners. Sommige critici, die de roman met het toen al hoogoplopende Palestijns-Joodse conflict associeerden, veroordeelden de afloop als te defaitistisch. Anderen interpreteerden het verhaal als uiting van een algemene utopische toekomstvisie. De schrijver zelf ontkende elke politieke verwijzing: ‘Mijn roman gaat niet over Palestijnen en Joden, maar over kippen.’ Ishaq Musa al-Husseini was een Palestijnse geleerde, criticus, filoloog en vertaler. Hij werd in 1904 geboren in Jeruzalem, in een traditioneel, religieus nationalistisch gezin. Na zijn middelbare schoolopleiding studeerde en werkte hij in Caïro, Londen en Göttingen, waarna hij (in 1934) terugkeerde naar Jeruzalem. In 1948 vluchtte hij (als gevolg van de verdrijving van de Palestijnen tijdens de Nakba) naar Aleppo. Daarna vestigde hij zich in Beiroet en Caïro. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Would probably read it again at some point.

Glad someone recommended this to me. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. A solid 5/5 for me.
