Overview: Ez a könyv ma talán a legsikeresebb és legnépszerűbb bevezetés és áttekintés a nyelvtudomány céljairól, területeiről és módszereiről. A középiskolai magyar nyelvtan ismeretén túl csupán egészséges érdeklődésre tart számot, arra, hogy az olvasó olyan kérdésekre keressen választ, hogy miképpen és miért változhat a nyelv, miben különbözik a magyar nyelv más nyelvektől, miben hasonlít a magyar más nyelvekre és általában a nyelvek mely tulajdonságai közösek és miben különböznek az állatok közlési rendszereitől, miképpen tanulja meg a gyermek az anyanyelvét, hogyan „veszítheti el" anyanyelvét a felnőtt egy agyi sérülés után, tudnak-e beszélni a számítógépek és egyáltalán milyen nyelvi mutatványokra képesek, mi köze a nyelvnek a gondolkodáshoz és így tovább. A nyelv annyira része mindennapi életünknek, hogy észre se vesszük, amikor jól működik - éppúgy, ahogy testünk működése sem tűnik föl, hacsak nincs valami bajunk. A nyelvész persze nem orvosa, hanem kutatója, „anatómusa" ennek a különös és bonyolult emberi „szervnek", amely mindannyiunk fejében lakozik. A nyelv leírásával, elméleti igényű elemzésével, az emberi tudat lényegi vonásaival ismerkedhetünk meg.Kevés olyan ismeretterjesztő, illetve tankönyv lehet, amely - mint ez a kötet - 27 év óta tartja a helyét a könyvesboltokban, az iskolai, sőt egyetemi tananyagban és nem utolsósorban az olvasók polcain. A solid read. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. A solid 4 stars from me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. A solid 5/5 for me.
