Overview: Max Stirner werd op 25 oktober 1806 geboren te Bayreuth als Johann Caspar Schmidt en studeerde aan de universiteiten van Berlijn, Erlangen en Königsberg. In Berlijn volgde Stirner o.a. de “Vorlesungen” (hoorcolleges) van G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831) en Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834). Tussen 1839 en 1844 was hij leraar Duits, literatuur en geschiedenis en maakte deel uit van “die Freien”, vaak omschreven als de Berlijnse jonghegelianen, die elkaar ontmoetten in een wijnbar aan de Friedrichstrasse.In 1844 verscheen zijn magnum opus: Der Einzige und sein Eigentum. Dit werk genoot niet alleen een enorme weerklank onder “die Freien”, maar werd ook druk becommentarieerd door de jonge Karl Marx (1818-1883). Der Einzige und sein Eigentum werd echter geen commercieel succes. Nadat eerder zijn eerste vrouw gestorven was in het kraambed, verliet zijn tweede vrouw Marie Dänhardt hem en beweerde later dat ze noch van Stirner gehouden, noch hem gerespecteerd had. Vanaf 1847 leidde Stirner een armtierig bestaan en sloot zich af van de gebeurtenissen en ontwikkelingen van zijn tijd. Zo schijnt de revolutie van 1848 aan hem voorbij te zijn gegaan. Wel vertaalde Stirner nog een aantal economische werken in het Duits, zoals de geschriften van Adam Smith (1723-1790) en Jean-Baptiste Say (1767-1832). Na enkele jaren op de loop te zijn geweest voor zijn schuldeisers stierf Stirner op 25 juni 1856 in volslagen anonimiteit.Max Stirner dankt zijn relatieve naambekendheid aan het radicale en provocatieve Der Einzige und sein Eigentum. Volgens sommige commentatoren speelde hij een niet te onderschatten rol in de intellectuele ontwikkeling van Karl Marx en Friedrich Nietzsche. Stirner vond nadien echter vooral weerklank in literaire en artistieke milieus (Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, enz.). Desondanks kende Der Einzige und sein Eigentum maar één Nederlandse vertaling, die inmiddels al van 1907 dateert.[1] Daarom leek het ons aangewezen om vandaag — honderd jaar later — een nieuwe Nederlandse vertaling te publiceren die de oorspronkelijke Duitse tekst op de voet volgt en bijzondere aandacht besteedt aan de specifieke hegeliaanse terminologie die Stirner hanteerde.Tot nu toe hebben de meeste commentatoren zich beperkt tot de nogal voor de hand liggende vergelijking tussen Stirner en het negentiende eeuwse anarchisme en nihilisme. Daardoor wordt weinig ruimte gelaten voor de veelzijdigheid en de complexiteit van Der Einzige und sein Eigentum en de jonghegeliaanse context waarbinnen het ontstond. Alleen tegen die achtergrond kan men Stirners ironie ten volle begrijpen en vermijden dat talloze impliciete en expliciete verwijzingen naar Hegel letterlijk worden genomen. Het leek ons aangewezen om daar in het nawoord op in te gaan, waar we een meer algemene poging zullen ondernemen om Stirners denken inzichtelijk te maken.Het boek kan moeilijk herleid worden tot eender welk “-isme”. Mede daarom blijft het verbazend actueel. Het bevat stof om de bestaande ideologie en uiteenlopende denksystemen te bevragen, maar zonder een alternatief in de plaats te stellen.De lezer blijft achter met een weggevaagde horizon, maar ook met het besef dat de lach het meest geschikte middel is om met alle bestaande ideeën en instanties om te gaan aangezien het onmogelijk is om zich er volledig aan te onttrekken.Al is Der Einzige und sein Eigentum ontstaan binnen een specifieke historische context, toch blijft Stirners algemene kritiek op de filosofie en op de bestaande mens- en wereldbeelden opvallend actueel. Bovendien maakt de frivole en ironiserende stijl de lectuur van dit werk tot een boeiende en intrigerende ervaring.
