Overview: This is a thought provoking and entertaining novel. It takes us back to Jesus’ time while staying connected to current times. Join Rebecca and Jonathan on their journey as they find what’s revealed in their copy of Lazarus’ Gospel. Their book discloses Lazarus’ vision after Jesus raises him from the dead as recorded in the Gospel of John 11: 1~45. It also an encouraging novel: Jonathan and Rebecca not only start a new life together as they peel off their old life but also regain their passion towards each other. Rebecca also realizes how Jesus raised Lazarus back to life can be viewed as a correlation: God brings some things that had ‘died’ within her ‘back to life’. The ancient group Lazarus started is reignited, or brought back to life, in the novel. It not only emphasizes the Trinity and Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, but, as part of the novel, connects Old Testament scripture to how the Holy Spirit works in those who are a part of Lazarus’ group. Fiction does meet non-fiction at various points in Lazarus’ Gospel however. It shows how past event and events of today are fulfilling what prophecy spoke about over a thousand years ago. It’s only a matter of time until the book of Revelation comes alive right before our very eyes. Events in the Middle East, as well as right here in the United States, say that we’re possibly in the Last Days already. These accounts aren’t given just for ‘entertainment’ but as a way to look at world events and to help us trust Jesus’ command: “So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.” (MT 24:42 – New Living Translation)Research done while writing Lazarus’ Gospel show how long-term trends have developed, how they are escalating, and what might come in the future. These results are incorporated into Lazarus’ Gospel in a creative way. It also has hundreds of Bible references listed in the footnotes to be reviewed if desired. While the novel has been slow to gain a large readership (the reason for joining GoodReads), some who have read it have expressed an interest in developing some of the ideas brought out in the novel. Not bad, but not my favorite. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
