Overview: 1880’ernes København er en kulturel smeltedigel. Alt er i bevægelse: tankerne, moralen, erhvervslivet, følelseslivet. Georg Brandes holder sine berømte forelæsninger hvor han tager afstand fra tidens højstemte æstetik og proklamerer at den nye tids litteratur er naturalismen. Hans bror Edvard er med til at starte den radikale avis Politiken. Mange af tidens store ånder søger til København, blandt dem Victoria Benedictsson og romanens centrale skikkelse August Strindberg, som er på flugt efter at han under Giftas-processen er blevet beskyldt for blasfemi mod kirken og for kvindehad. Nu vil han erobre verdensteatret via København som efter Verdensudstillingen i 1888 er Nordens Paris, en livlig metropol, centrum for livets og kunstens forandring. Det store tivoli er en roman som ikke bare kaster lys over en uhyre spændende epoke i historien, men også over Strindbergs genialitet og destruktivitet. I Det store tivoli møder vi tidens forfattere, skuespillere, frie ånder, journalister, ballerinaer og tjenestefolk. Centralt i bogen står også Knud Wiisby som er en slags sekretær for Strindberg og samtidig er ansat af Edvard Brandes til at rapportere alt om Strindbergs gøren og laden. Wiisby er også nært forbundet med den svenske forfatter Victoria Benedictsson, som nærer en stor og ulykkelig passion for tidens store ånd Georg Brandes. fortsættes næste flap. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
