Overview: Študija ''Med Italijo in Ilirikom'', ki je nastala v okviru raziskovalnega programa ''Slovenska zgodovina'' predstavlja prvi poskus zgodovine današnjega slovenskega prostora v pozni antiki, Tematsko zajema tri vsebinske sklope. Pri prinaša regionalno zgodovino province, v katero je bil vključen obravnavani prostor, v časovnem razponu od nastopa vojaških cesarjev v drugi tretjini 3.st., prek 4.st. kot vrhom poznoantične dobe do zatona in propada zahodnega rimskega cesarstva v zadnji četrtini 5. st. Drugi tematski sklop zajema zgodovino t.i. barbarski ljudstev, ki so od zadnje četrtine 4.st. bistveno oblikovale pogoje življenja v pozni antiki. Medtem ko so Zahodni Goti pomembno vplivali na ta prostor le tri desetletja (okvirno 380-410), navzočnost hunske velesile pa je bila dogodkovno omejena na pohod v Italijo (452), pa so močnejše sledi pustili polstoletna vzhodnogotska doba, od pozne gotsko-bizantinske vojne dalje dvajsetletna navzočnost Langobardov, v sklepnem delu 6. st. pa začetek naseljevanja Slovanov. Tretji tematski sklop predstavlja zgodovino krščanstva in posebej cerkvene organizacije od poznega 3. do zgodnjega 7.st. Podroben prikaz tega področja, ki predstavlja vrh verske, kulturne in duhovne zgodovine pozne antike, omogoča veliko število literarnih, epigrafskih in materialnih virov.

A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
