Overview: In Nederlandse true crime boeken komen de criminele hoofdpersonen als regel zelf niet of nauwelijks aan het woord. Deze nieuwe biografie brengt hierin verandering. In dit boek komt een crimineel zelf aan het woord. Het geeft een onthutsende inkijk in de denk- en leefwereld van een zeer gewelddadig man. Voor zijn biografie besloot de hoofdpersoon, Jan Hoolwerf, samen te werken met criminoloog Frank van Gemert. De gegevens voor dit boek werden verzameld in de soms heftige periode tussen twee vrijheidsstraffen. Ze zijn gebaseerd op een lange reeks gesprekken, bezoeken aan Jans vroegere woonplaatsen en uitgebreid archiefonderzoek. In het boek vertelt Jan Hoolwerf o.a. hoe hij, na een gewelddadig leven in Nederland, lid wordt van een Amerikaanse prison gang. Hij moet in de VS een straf uitzitten wegens het smokkelen van cocaïne. Uiteindelijk komt hij vrij, keert terug naar Nederland. Daar pikt hij zijn oude leven weer op. Onverwacht pleegt hij dan een levensdelict. Het slachtoffer overleeft De dader wordt voor poging tot moord tot vijf jaar gevangenis en tbs veroordeeld. Van prison-gang tot tbs is niet een journalistiek verslag van criminele feiten, maar het persoonlijke verhaal van een gewelddadige man die geheel vastloopt. Een schokkend relaas zonder excuses of neutralisaties, dat zowel de eigen woorden van de dader bevat als een scherpe analyse van de wetenschapper. Frank van Gemert (1958) studeerde Culturele Antropologie en deed o.a. onderzoek naar jeugdbendes, drugshandel en krakers. Hij promoveerde op een onderzoek naar crimineel gedrag onder Marokkaanse jongens. Hij is verbonden aan de afdeling Criminologie van de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Will be looking for more from this author.
