Overview: Tradycyjne malarstwo koreańskie, jako pierwszy album o Korei poświęcony jest sztuce, zwanej w Korei minhwa. W sposób nietypowy tłumaczy koreańskie wierzenia i obyczaje poprzez malarstwo.Pokazane tu tradycyjne malarstwo - minhwa - pochodzi głównie ze złotego okresu malarstwa koreańskiego, przypadającego na środek i koniec epoki Choson, czyli okres od początku XVII do przełomu XIX/XX w. W połowie XVII w., po upadku chińskiej dynastii Ming, sztuka koreańska zaczęła uniezależniać się od Chin, a koreańscy artyści zaczęli poszukiwać inspiracji w swojej kulturze, zwracając się ku malarstwu symbolicznemu. Neokonfucjanizm, rozwijający się z nakazu nowych władców od ponad dwóch stuleci, zdominował życie społeczno-polityczne kraju i zaczął pozytywnie wpływać na rozwój nauki i sztuki. Nie tylko artyści, ale przede wszystkim uczeni, którzy najczęściej sami zajmowali się malarstwem i kaligrafią, wskutek prestiżu, jakim się cieszyli, wyznaczali klasyczną koreańską estetykę. Do najbardziej znanych twórców tej epoki należą Kim Hong Do, Shin Yun Bok i Chong Son. Niestety, większość artystów pozostała anonimowa.Choć często Koreańczycy określali tradycyjne malarstwo sokhwa, minjunghwa lub paeksonghwa - ”prymitywnym malarstwem”, „malarstwem ludowym” lub „malarstwem prostych ludzi”, była to sztuka kierowana zarówno na szlacheckie dwory jak i do prostych ludzi, i wyróżniała się dość skomplikowaną formą.Subtelna harmonia, którą stara się pokazać album, polegała również na łączeniu trzech dziedzin sztuki, uznawanych za doskonałe: malarstwa, kaligrafii i poezji. Ślady pędzla na obrazie zdradzały stan ducha artysty: radość lub smutek, szlachetność jego charakteru czy miłość do natury. Kaligrafia zaś miała oddawać stan jego umysłu. Najlepsi twórcy utrwalali swoje najskrytsze myśli na jedwabiu i papierze. Zwrot ku symbolizmowi rozpowszechnił w Korei obrazy z lotosami, smokami, parami ptaków, ryb, tygrysów i srok czy obrazów z dziesięcioma symbolami długiego życia, zwanych sipjangsaengdo.Warto zauważyć, że zarówno autor, jak i koreański wydawca odrzucili akademicki sposób przekazu, wprowadzając czytelnika w świat koreańskich tradycji poprzez malarstwo oraz przenikające się z nim kaligrafie i poetyckie rozważania na temat zagadnień piękna w najważniejszych momentach życia, od narodzin do śmierci. Nie oznaczało to bynajmniej rezygnacji z rzetelności naukowej: wręcz przeciwnie, otworzyło drzwi do nowego „ogrodu nauk koreanistycznych”, zajmujących się sztuką i społeczeństwem Korei.Warszawa 2009
