Overview: The sixth reader is described by its publisher as "a rhetorical readingbook, for the more advanced classes." It begins with 60 pages of instruction in articulation, inflection, accent and emphasis, reading verse, the voice, and gesture.This is followed by 179 literature-based lessons. These include readings from Sir Walter Scott, Shakespeare, Milton, Longfellow, Lord Byron, Cowper, Patrick Henry, William Pitt, William Cullen Bryant, Charles Dickens, Dr. Samuel Johnson, and others. Many selections are prefaced by brief biographical notes about the author, which adds interest and context to the reading. By the end of the sixthreader, your student will be working withliterary selections from Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Dr. Beecher, the Bible, Washington Irving, Daniel Webster, and other well-known writers and orators.Reading level for tested selections in this book ranged fromFlesch-Kincaidegrade level 9.4 for an early selectionthroughgrade level12.6. A few passages tested at graduate level, but they shouldall be accessible to a teen with a good learning foundation. An effective way to use these readers is to use Charlotte Mason's language arts methods of copywork, recitation, and narration for any of the lessons presented. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Still a good book.

A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. A solid 5/5 for me.

I was pleasantly surprised. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.

Finished it in a couple of days. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Glad I picked this up.

Good, but not quite perfect. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Not bad at all.
