Overview: "The Karate Kid" meets "Breaking Bad" in this true coming of age story of a chubby 13-year old John Graden in the early 1970s who was the victim of bullies, bad clothes, and a mouth-full of braces. After seeing a Bruce Lee kung fu movie, he joins a karate club to learn the way of wisdom and butt whipping. He idolized his deadly black belt instructors only to discover that they were involved in drugs, perverted sex, and even murder. In the mid-1970s, the kung fu craze was at its peak. The Kung Fu TV series was number one, Kung Fu Fighting was the number one song, and Bruce Lee was tops at the box office with Enter the Dragon, which was, you guessed it, a kung fu movie. The martial arts portrayed in these programs always seemed to attach an element of enlightenment to the entertainment of eye gouging, neck cracking, low blow battles. The high-kicking heroes all had a grand master to teach them, guide them, and keep them humble. This wise old master was part of the martial arts package.Like millions of other teens, this combination of thought provoking wisdom and nut-busting techniques inspired John Graden to join the local karate school.He idolized his deadly black belt instructors only to discover that they were involved in drugs, perverted sex, and even murder. Good, but not quite perfect. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.
