Overview: Njåls saga er av mange betraktet som den betydeligste av alle islandske ættesagaer. Den er skrevet henimot år 1300 og finnes i et større antall håndskrifter enn noen annen islandsk ættesaga. Handlingen utspiller seg på Syd-Island ca. år 1000. Helten i første del er Gunnar Håmundsson fra Lidarende, som blir gift med den vakre, men troløse Hallgerd. Gunnars venn og rådgiver er den vise og fredsæle Njål på Bergtorskvål, som er gift med Bergtora. De to kvinner blir uvenner, dreper hverandres treller og egger mennene til hevn og drap. Gunnar blir landsforvist, men med ordene «fager er lien» snur han ved avreisen, blir omringet og drept på sin gård, da Hallgerd nekter ham en lokk av sitt hår til buestreng. I annen del fortsetter fiendtlighetene, og Njål og hans sønner blir brent inne på Bergtorskvål, Bergtora følger sin mann i døden. Siste del handler om brannstifterne og Kåre Sølmundsson, Njåls svigersønn. Den foregår til dels i Irland hvor slaget ved Clontarf 1014 skildres. Verket avsluttes ved at Kåre forlikes med Flose, brannstifternes anfører, og gifter seg med Hildegunn, Floses brordatter. I Njåls saga møtes tradisjonstroskap og fri fortellerkunst, sagakonvensjon og innslag fra helgensagaer og ridderromantikk. Menneskeskildringen er sterk og nyanserik. Man glemmer ikke lett den djerve Gunnar fra Lidarende og hans vakre, men svikefulle hustru Hallgerd, Bergtora og ikke minst Njål selv, som fremtrer som en ualminnelig levende og dypt fengslende skikkelse. Njål forutser det som skal skje, og han setter hele sin klokskap inn på å hindre det. Men han vet at alt er forgjeves fordi alt går den veien skjebnen har bestemt.
