Overview: Poetry. Christina Olivares's debut collection NO MAP OF THE EARTH INCLUDES STARS, the 2014 Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize, establishes her as one of the best poets writing today. In striking and gorgeous language, Olivares explores national, spiritual and linguistic borders, and the imperative to and consequences of crossing those borders. The primary sequence, "Petition," amasses a petition for the orisha/deity Babalu Aye's witness of a parent's crossing-induced schizophrenia at time when mortal avenues for recovery (spiritual, mental, physical) have been exhausted. This sequence draws from medical and sociological texts, political history, hallucinated conversation, and mythologies. The second sequence, "Other Lives," centers on themes of queerness and youth. NO MAP OF THE EARTH INCLUDES STARS showcases the itinerary of a poet not so much pushing boundaries as transcending them.

Pretty good overall. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Not bad at all.

Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

It was okay. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Good, but not quite perfect. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. A solid 4 stars from me.

Really enjoyed this one. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Glad I picked this up.
