Overview: “Maelzel’s Chess-Player” is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). First published in 1836, the tale is centered around an automaton chess player called “The Turk.” This edition also contains a long note on Poe’s life and work written by French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) in 1852. The essay was translated in English by Henry Curwen (1845-1892) in 1873.

Such a great read. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Will be looking for more from this author.

Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.
