Overview: Não obstante o «renascimento» e a recente visibilidade social que as modificações corporais tomaram nas sociedades ocidentais, nomeadamente na sociedade portuguesa, os jovens que cultivam o gosto pela tatuagem e o body piercing em larga extensão no corpo têm merecido, ao longo do tempo, mais atenção e interesse analítico por parte da psicologia ou da psiquiatria do que por parte da sociologia. Este trabalho propõe-se então descobrir os significados que esses jovens investem nas suas marcas corporais, compreender e interpretar sociologicamente as lógicas simbólicas subjacentes à sua utilização, e examinar o papel da marcação corporal na produção e manutenção de identidades e sociabilidades. Simultaneamente, o trabalho propõe-se ainda caracterizar as condições sociais de produção dos corpos extensivamente marcados, bem como analisar os efeitos sociais da sua assunção, numa sociedade que vive com alguma relutância e preconceito a modificação corporal mais perene, em particular a que revisita e evoca figuras corporais histórica e socialmente estigmatizadas, na medida em que exige um elevado grau de plasticidade identitária e de maleabilidade corporal dos seus actores. Em síntese, é objectivo genérico deste trabalho identificar os diferentes usos, reconstruir a pluralidade de sentidos e averiguar dos potenciais efeitos, relativos à prática de marcar extensivamente o corpo em contextos juvenis.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Glad I picked this up.

It was just alright. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. A generous 3 stars.
