Overview: 200 Jahre nach dem Erscheinen von Kants Kritik der reinen Vernunft sieht sich jede Kritik, die Aufklärung in der Gegenwart einlösen will, mit einer neuen Form des falschen Bewußtseins konfrontiert. Dieses falsche Bewußtsein beruht weder auf Lüge noch auf Irrtum, es ist auch nicht durch die auf eine »Kritik der politischen Ökonomie« gestützte Ideologiekritik aufzulösen. »Zynismus ist das aufgeklärte falsche Bewußtsein. Es ist das modernisierte unglückliche Bewußtsein, an dem Aufklärung zugleich erfolgreich und vergeblich gearbeitet hat. Es hat seine Aufklärung gelernt, aber nicht vollzogen und wohl nicht vollziehen können. Gutsituiert und miserabel zugleich fühlt sich dieses Bewußtsein von keiner Ideologiekritik mehr betroffen, da seine Falschheit bereits reflexiv gefedert ist.« Den Gehalt dieses selbst zynischen Satzes sucht der vorliegende Essay zu entwickeln, in einer Form, die sich der Verfahrensweisen des antiken Kynismus bedient: des Lachens, der Beschimpfung, der Angriffe. Aufgezeigt wird - in einem einleitenden Abschnitt - wie die verschiedenen Strategien aufklärerischer Kritik von den jeweiligen Gegenmächten umgebogen wurden und schließlich in unserem Jahrhundert in den modernen Zynismus münden. »Der zynische Herr lüpft die Maske ein wenig, zumal man ohnedies versucht, sie ihm herunterzureißen, lächelt seinen schwächeren Gegenspieler an - und unterdrückt ihn doch. Sachzwang, Machtzwang! Wissen ist Macht, auch so. Die Vormacht lüftet in ihren Zynismen ein wenig ihre Geheimnisse, treibt sozusagen ein bißchen Selbstaufklärung und ›plaudert aus der Schule‹.« Die verschiedenen Ausprägungen dieses Zynismus läßt Sloterdijk in einem zweiten Abschnitt Revue passieren. Im letzten Teil seiner Untersuchung analysiert der Autor eine Epoche, in der der moderne Zynismus das politische und kulturelle Bewußtsein zum ersten Mal deutlich prägte: die Weimarer Republik, deren erstes Erbe der Faschismus und dessen zweiter Sproß unsere Zeit ist.
