Overview: Charles Bukowski is the most underrated and neglected writer in contemporary American literature. Even after publishing over thirty volumes of poetry, novels, and numerous short stories and essays, Bukowski remains snubbed by most critics while ignored by the rest. Still, his work ever continues to attract a growing audience. What is this appeal in contrast with the critical rejection? There must certainly be a “something” present; but what is that “something” that continues to draw a reading public? Why does one read Bukowski, and then attempt to read everything else he has written (even without separating the wheat from any chaff), and is then left still longing for another volume to roll off the presses – even after this author has passed away? Why does one read Bukowski, and then try to coerce friends to read him as well; and why do these friends read Bukowski, and attempt to read everything else he has written, and then are left longing for still another volume? The scope of this thesis attempts to explore the phenomenal appeal of Bukowski to the reading public in relation to the remarkable rejection by the critics of the reading public. The approach will involve an analysis of the appeal of the author as character, the appeal of the author's sociological statements and world view, and the appeal of the style in which he presents himself and his views to his audience. Also to be explored are the critical camps: who praises, who damns, and why? Actually, the thesis of this thesis is “where do we place Charles Bukowski?” Or, then again, I suppose this could be rephrased, “Does anybody care? If so, then, why?”

I was pleasantly surprised. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. A solid 5/5 for me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Will be looking for more from this author.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Pretty good overall. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Still a good book.
