Overview: José María Arguedas conoció las historias y personajes con los que escribió esta novela de un modo especial. En 1967, en su condición de profesor de la Universidad Agraria de La Molina, viaja a Chimbote, puerto del norte del Perú, para realizar allí un estudio antropológico sobre industrialización y procesos migratorios. En ese lugar, Arguedas vio "una especie de gran remolino social en el que grupos emigrados de diferentes zonas de la costa y de la sierra han entablado un estado de relaciones especialísimas". De esa forma el escritor se nutría del antropólogo y encontraba la intuición fundante de la nueva novela: El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo, el hombre de la sierra y el de la costa; el pueblo peruano disgregado por la geografía y por la historia, pero conglomerado y dinámico a la vez en su búsqueda de mejores condiciones de vida. La novela sorprende a Arguedas en el momento de agudización de un cuadro depresivo que lo había acompañado por años; lo que evalúa como victoria le permite la templanza; lo que asoma como derrota lo conduce al desengaño. Y entonces, la escritura queda marcada por una toma de posición literaria radical: el escritor incluye en el libro las páginas de su diario de vida, entrelazando su historia con la de sus personajes; Arguedas queda así expuesto en la novela, como en abismo, escindido ante el proceso de la vida por su propia desesperanza y su impotencia frente a las cuartillas del proyecto literario y político que porfiaban por seguir en blanco, para quedar luego pobladas de humanidad, lucidez y rebeldía.
