Overview: In Afgang, deel zes van Het Bureau dat de periode 1982-1987 bestrijkt, ontladen de opgehoopte spanningen zich op alle niveaus. Als hoofd van zijn afdeling op het A.P. Beerta-Instituut stuit hoofdpersoon Maarten Koning op lijdelijk én openlijk verzet tegen het door hem gevoerde beleid. Dit leidt met een aantal medewerkers tot een definitieve breuk. Hij voelt zich mislukt als afdelingshoofd en trekt zich steeds meer terug in zijn andere taken.De verhouding met zijn vrouw Nicolien lijdt daaronder. In die zelfde tijd wordt zij geconfronteerd met de ziekte en dood van haar moeder, en korte tijd later met die van hun vriend Frans Veen, de enige die in haar ogen een fatsoenlijk leven heeft geleid. Dat verhoogt haar gevoel alleen te zijn en ze verwijt Maarten dat hij daar te weinig begrip voor heeft.Een lastig probleem voor Maarten is de vervanging van directeur Balk, die halverwege dit deel vervroegd uittreedt. Zijn vertrek veroorzaakt een machtsstrijd, die zich aanvankelijk tegen Maarten richt omdat hij de beste papieren lijkt te hebben om Balk op te volgen. Plotseling echter doorkruist het Hoofdbureau alle intriges met de benoeming van een directeur die vooral lijkt te worden aangesteld om harde sanering door te voeren. Tegelijkertijd wordt de Wetenschapscommissie vervangen door een college waarvan verwacht mag worden dat ze de nieuwe directeur in die taak zal steunen. Maartens taak is het dan om de orde op het Bureau te herstellen en de nieuwkomer in te werken. Hij slaagt daarin, maar niet zonder problemen. Ten slotte neemt hij met een bezwaard hart maar zonder spijt ook zelf afscheid.

A solid read. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. A solid 5/5 for me.

It was okay. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. A generous 3 stars.
